About Mike

I have been a practicing tax attorney for over 30 years.  I have two daughters, Whitney, age 21, and Kasey, age 18, and a step-daughter, Madison, age 13.  I also have a wonderful wife, Robbie. My mother, Sara, has lived with us for the last several years. As the sole male in this female dominated household, the only hobby that I could have chosen that would have been a bigger hit would be making shoes. Watch out Donald Pliner!

First Exposure to Jewelry Making

On a trip to Charleston, SC with Robbie in 2000, Robbie and I were both impressed with the earrings of the front desk manager at the bed and breakfast where we were staying.  Following her directions to the person who made the earrings for her, we stumbled into the very well concealed upstairs studio of a jewelry maker named Dixie Dunbar.  Dixie now  has a wonderful retail shop on King Street in Charleston (DixieDunbarStudio.com) that anyone interested in jewelry will want to visit. Dixie's shop was featured in the October, 2007, issue of Vogue Magazine.

Dixie made Robbie a pair of earrings on the spot, and I, who have always enjoyed working with my hands, was intrigued by the speed with which the earrings were designed and made.  The memory of that visit stayed in the back of my mind for a number of years, tugging at me to try to duplicate what I had seen Dixie do.

The Asheville Experience

Preparing for a vacation trip to Montreat in the mountains near Asheville, NC, I advised all of my family members to bring a craft with them, because I wasn't sure that we would have television or internet access where we were staying.  I purchased some beads, wire, findings, tools, and a book on jewelry making for my craft.  I was so excited when I actually made something resembling jewelry that I was waking people up in the middle of the night to show my creations.  Looking back on some of those things now, I  realize how  much my family must love me, because everyone was so supportive and enthusiastic while lying through their teeth.

From that first jewelry making experience, I have devoted every spare moment to jewelry making, trying everything from sterling silver to polymer clay. I have learned first hand to appreciate the axioms that one person's junk is another person's treasure and there's no accounting for taste. I sell my jewelry in local shops, directly by word of mouth, and now, hopefully, on the internet.  Hopefully, you will find something on this website that you will treasure. You can bet that I had fun making it all.
